Is Meditation Practical?

Ask Joshua that!

God gave Joshua the leadership reins of Israel and commanded him to take them into Canaan and conquer the land. Do you remember what God told Joshua what was essential for success? Meditation on God’s Word (Joshua 1:8).

Imagine all the things Joshua had to take care of and think about! As the appointed leader of God’s people Joshua’s life and career had to be thoroughly in line with what God expected of them. The only way that would happen was if he really knew God’s Word.

Have you ever thought about the practical ramifications of the Melchizedekian aspects of Christ’s priesthood? Maybe not, huh? 🙂

The author of Hebrews (whoever he was) reproved his readers in Hebrews 5:11-13. They should have been mature enough to “dig deep” into this “rib-eye steak” teaching, but they were still drinking baby milk!

Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant (Heb 5:11-13).

The better grasp that you have of God’s character and will as revealed in the Bible, the more you will think like Christ thinks, desire what Christ desires, and act like Christ would act. The more “meatier” teaching you are able to comprehend and apply the more mature and discerning you will be–

Solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil (Hebrews 5:14).

Never consider any truth revealed in the Bible as useless:

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
